Knitted Cake

For a grandmother who has a passion for knitting blankets for those she loves, I wanted to celebrate her warm heart with a special cake.

I kicked things off by using a simple clay extractor to make long ropes of marshmallow fondant, that would eventually become part of a ball of yarn.

I then made a giant cake ball, froze it overnight, and covered the ball in ropes of fondant in order to make it look like a little ball of yarn!

Next, I worked on the “knitted” fondant.  A little trick to create this look is to take two ropes of fondant and twist them in opposite directions.  From there, I simply stick them together side by side.  When put together this way, the four ropes create a visual illusion of a knitted design.

Underneath the ropes of lavender colored “knitted” fondant, I added a layer of darker purple fondant, which added some nice contrast.

To bring it all together, I used a real pair of gold colored knitting needles capped off at the top with matching purple fondant.  I then carefully placed the fondant cake ball of yarn on top of the cake.  Voila!

This single red heart fondant “button”was her favorite part of the cake 🙂  It’s dusted with a gold shimmer pearl dust.

She was so happy with the final result, I could hardly get her to stop crying in order to snap a picture! Happy Birthday Gram 🙂
